Program overview

The English Language Program at Selkirk College’s Castlegar campus is a 4-24 month ESL program building the academic English skills for entry into Selkirk credit programs.

Delivered across levels matched to each student's starting ability (4 to 24 months), the program develops academic reading, writing, listening and presentation skills, with progression into Selkirk certificate, diploma and associate-degree programs on successful completion — no re-application or new IELTS attempt required.

Selkirk College, founded in 1966 as British Columbia’s first regional community college, is a fully public institution in the province’s West Kootenay region. The 65-hectare forested Castlegar campus offers genuinely small classes, on-campus student housing, and some of the lowest combined tuition-and-living costs of any BC public college. University courses transfer to UBC, SFU, UVic and other BC universities through the province’s formal transfer system, and graduates working in the region can pursue the BC Provincial Nominee Program toward permanent residence.

Note: as a stand-alone English-language program, this pathway is not itself PGWP-eligible — post-study work eligibility comes from the credit program students progress into (final decisions rest with IRCC).

  • Credit Program Progression — entering diplomas, certificates and associate degrees
  • Academic English Competence — lectures, essays and exams in English
  • University Transfer Direction — building toward the BC transfer pathway
  • Health Program Preparation — meeting health-field English requirements
  • Local Integration — settling into Kootenay life before credit study
  • PGWP-Eligible Program Track — progressing to credentials that support post-study work

Students graduate into the same Selkirk programs as direct entrants — the pathway simply changes where they start.
