Program overview
The Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Financial Planning is a 16-month graduate-level credential for degree holders who want to enter Canadian financial services with a licensable skill set rather than a general business qualification.
The curriculum is built around the competencies Canadian planners are actually examined on: personal financial planning and the planning process, investment products and portfolio construction, risk management and insurance, income tax planning, retirement and pension planning, estate planning and trusts, ethics and regulatory conduct, and client relationship and communication practice. Case work runs on real client scenarios and students build complete financial plans as assessed deliverables.
The commercial logic is direct: the coursework is aligned to the educational requirements for Canadian financial planning designations, so graduates step toward QAFP or CFP registration instead of starting that path from zero. For international students with a commerce or economics background from home, this is a short, high-conversion route into a regulated profession.
CapU is a fully public teaching university on Vancouver’s North Shore — a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19280078102) with university status since 2008. Classes are small, faculty teach rather than delegate to assistants, and tuition sits well below the big Vancouver research universities while the credential carries the same public-institution standing.
Its field maps to CIP 52.0804 (Financial planning and services). Important: this is a non-degree credential, so unlike CapU’s bachelor’s programs it is not exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction — eligibility depends on this CIP field appearing on IRCC’s current eligible list at the time you apply. Confirm the live list with an Apply Study Visa counsellor before committing. Final decisions rest with IRCC.
What it costs per year · indicative
Living cost is an estimate; tuition is the institute's published international fee. We confirm exact, current figures before you pay anything.
Do you qualify?
These are the published minimums. Whether your profile fits — with your marks, gap and budget — is exactly what a free counsellor check confirms.
Admission requirements
Who can apply (guide for international students):
- Education: A completed Bachelor’s degree with 65% or higher from a recognised university.
- Program-specific: Letter of intent, plus a resume or experience summary.

- TOEFL iBT: Total 83
- PTE Academic: Overall 56
- Duolingo: 125

CapU assesses on documents with no interview for most programs, but international seats in the popular studio and health intakes fill months ahead — apply early rather than to the posted deadline. A British Columbia Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) is arranged through admissions. Ask an Apply Study Visa counsellor to confirm current fees, seats and PGWP conditions before applying.

Career opportunities
Financial planning is a licensed, referral-driven profession with steady demand across BC:
- Financial Planner (QAFP / CFP track) — the designation the diploma is built for
- Investment Advisor — bank and independent brokerage roles
- Personal Banking Advisor — the common first Canadian role
- Insurance and Risk Advisor — life, disability and group benefits
- Estate and Trust Officer — trust company positions
- Mortgage Advisor — a large BC market in its own right
Note that this is a non-degree credential, so PGWP eligibility is tied to IRCC’s field-of-study list — verify before applying.
