Program overview

The Bachelor of Communication Studies is a four-year degree combining communication theory with the production skills the field actually hires on, with an optional practicum in the final year.

Coursework covers media theory and criticism, public relations and strategic communication, journalism and reporting practice, digital and social media strategy, visual communication and design principles, video and audio production, intercultural communication, political communication and media policy, research methods, and a capstone campaign or production project. Students build a portfolio throughout rather than only at the end.

The deliberate balance here is between theory and craft. Programs that teach only theory produce graduates who can analyse media but not make it; programs that teach only production produce technicians who cannot build a strategy. CapU’s structure targets the middle — graduates who can plan a communications campaign and then execute the assets for it, which is precisely what small and mid-sized Canadian employers need from a single hire.

CapU is a fully public teaching university on Vancouver’s North Shore — a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19280078102) with university status since 2008. Classes are small, faculty teach rather than delegate to assistants, and tuition sits well below the big Vancouver research universities while the credential carries the same public-institution standing.

Its field maps to CIP 9.0101 (Communication and media studies). As a bachelor’s degree, graduates are exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction and may qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit of up to three years. Full-time on-campus study and graduation remain the conditions, and final decisions rest with IRCC.
