Program overview

The Bachelor of Tourism Management (Co-op) is a four-year degree with a paid four-month co-op work term built into the structure — one of the few CapU programs where industry employment is a graded part of the credential rather than an optional add-on.

Coursework covers destination marketing and management, sustainable tourism planning, hospitality and resort operations, event and conference management, tourism economics and finance, consumer behaviour in travel markets, revenue and yield management, Indigenous tourism, and a capstone in strategic tourism planning. Students also take the general business core — accounting, marketing, organisational behaviour, business law — so the degree reads as a business qualification, not a narrow vocational one.

Location is doing real work here. CapU sits between the Port of Vancouver, Whistler and the Sea-to-Sky corridor, one of the densest tourism economies in North America, and the school’s industry links run through resorts, cruise lines, destination marketing organisations and event companies that hire co-op students directly.

CapU is a fully public teaching university on Vancouver’s North Shore — a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19280078102) with university status since 2008. Classes are small, faculty teach rather than delegate to assistants, and tuition sits well below the big Vancouver research universities while the credential carries the same public-institution standing.

Its field maps to CIP 52.0901 (Tourism and travel services management). As a bachelor’s degree, graduates are exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction and may qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit of up to three years. Full-time on-campus study and graduation remain the conditions, and final decisions rest with IRCC.

Career opportunities

Tourism and hospitality is BC’s second-largest private employer, and the co-op term usually converts:

  • Hotel / Resort Operations Manager — the standard progression route
  • Destination Marketing Officer — tourism boards and DMOs
  • Event and Conference Manager — convention and MICE sector
  • Revenue / Yield Analyst — the analytical, higher-paid side
  • Tour and Adventure Operations Manager — Sea-to-Sky and cruise operators
  • Sustainable Tourism Consultant — a growing policy-driven niche

The co-op term produces Canadian work experience before graduation, which matters for both hiring and Express Entry points.
