Program overview

The University Diploma in Environment and Society - Environmental Sciences is the two-year version of CapU’s environmental sciences pathway, covering the technical foundation and laddering directly into the four-year degree.

Students take ecology and ecosystem processes, environmental chemistry, hydrology and water quality, soil and earth systems, climate and atmospheric processes, statistics and quantitative methods, and geographic information systems, alongside supporting chemistry, biology and mathematics. Field sampling and laboratory analysis run throughout, using the North Shore watersheds, forest and coastline as the working laboratory.

Two years is enough to reach technician-level competence — sampling protocols, laboratory analysis, GIS mapping and data handling — which is a real employment category in BC’s consulting and monitoring sector. Students who intend to work in Canada should note the PGWP caveat below and weigh the degree version, which carries the bachelor’s exemption.

CapU is a fully public teaching university on Vancouver’s North Shore — a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19280078102) with university status since 2008. Classes are small, faculty teach rather than delegate to assistants, and tuition sits well below the big Vancouver research universities while the credential carries the same public-institution standing.

Its field maps to CIP 3.0104 (Environmental science). Important: this is a non-degree credential, so unlike CapU’s bachelor’s programs it is not exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction — eligibility depends on this CIP field appearing on IRCC’s current eligible list at the time you apply. Confirm the live list with an Apply Study Visa counsellor before committing. Final decisions rest with IRCC.
