Program overview
The University Diploma in Visual Effects for Film, Streaming and Immersive Media is a two-year program aimed squarely at Vancouver’s visual effects industry, one of the largest concentrations of VFX employment anywhere in the world.
Coursework covers compositing in Nuke, rotoscoping and paint, keying and matte extraction, camera tracking and matchmoving, 3D integration and lighting for live-action plates, particle and dynamics simulation, matte painting and set extension, colour management across a production pipeline, and virtual production and immersive media workflows. Students work on live-action plates rather than synthetic exercises, and finish with a reel built to studio review expectations.
The immersive media component is what dates this program to the present rather than the last decade. Virtual production — LED volume work, real-time environments and in-camera effects — has moved from experiment to standard practice on major productions, and the skills overlap heavily with traditional VFX compositing. Graduates trained in both are more useful to studios than either alone.
CapU is a fully public teaching university on Vancouver’s North Shore — a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19280078102) with university status since 2008. Classes are small, faculty teach rather than delegate to assistants, and tuition sits well below the big Vancouver research universities while the credential carries the same public-institution standing.
Its field maps to CIP 50.0411 (Animation, interactive technology and video graphics). Important: this is a non-degree credential, so unlike CapU’s bachelor’s programs it is not exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction — eligibility depends on this CIP field appearing on IRCC’s current eligible list at the time you apply. Confirm the live list with an Apply Study Visa counsellor before committing. Final decisions rest with IRCC.
