Bachelor of Industrial Design (Honours)

The Bachelor of Industrial Design (Honours) is a four-year degree with a work placement, covering the design of manufactured physical products.

The studio core runs sketching and visual communication, form development and 3D modelling, human factors and ergonomics, materials and manufacturing processes, mechanical fundamentals and product architecture, CAD and computer-aided design, rapid prototyping and model making, design research and user insight, sustainable and circular design, design for manufacture and assembly, and professional practice including intellectual property and working with manufacturers. A substantial final-year capstone takes a product from research through to a resolved, manufacturable design.

Design for manufacture is the discipline’s hard edge. Anyone can render an appealing object; industrial designers must produce something that can actually be tooled, assembled and sold at a target cost. That constraint is what the four years teach, and as a degree the program sits outside the PGWP field-of-study restriction.

The work placement is a graded part of the program, so you finish with documented Canadian experience and a referee rather than only a transcript.

Humber Polytechnic — formerly Humber College — is Ontario’s largest public college and a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19376943122). The North campus in Etobicoke is its main site, running technology, engineering, health science, business and skilled trades programs in purpose-built labs and shops rather than lecture halls, with three intakes a year and the deepest employer network in the Greater Toronto Area.

Its field maps to CIP 50.0404 (Industrial and product design). Because this is a degree, graduates are exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction that applies to college credentials. Full-time on-campus study and graduation remain the conditions, and IRCC makes the final decision.
