Advanced College Diploma - Electromechanical Engineering Technology (Optional Co-op)

The Electromechanical Engineering Technology advanced diploma is the three-year technologist-level version of Humber’s automation stream, with an optional paid co-op.

Years one and two build the technician foundation — electrical circuits, mechanical systems, hydraulics and pneumatics, PLC programming, instrumentation and motor control. The third year moves from maintaining systems to designing them: advanced automation and control system design, industrial robotics programming and integration, SCADA and human-machine interface development, industrial networking and Industry 4.0 concepts, project management for automation projects, and a capstone in which teams design and commission a working automated system.

The technician-to-technologist distinction is a real career divide in Canada. Technicians maintain and repair; technologists specify, design and commission, and are paid accordingly. The extra year also supports a longer PGWP where the field is eligible.

The optional co-op stream is worth taking if you are offered it: paid Canadian work experience before graduation improves both hiring outcomes and Express Entry points, and co-op students frequently convert their placement into a full-time offer.

Humber Polytechnic — formerly Humber College — is Ontario’s largest public college and a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19376943122). The North campus in Etobicoke is its main site, running technology, engineering, health science, business and skilled trades programs in purpose-built labs and shops rather than lecture halls, with three intakes a year and the deepest employer network in the Greater Toronto Area.

Its field maps to CIP 15.0403 (Electromechanical technology). Important: this is a college credential rather than a degree, so it is not exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction — eligibility depends on this CIP field appearing on IRCC’s eligible list when you apply. Humber publishes a PGWP-eligible program list with CIP codes; check it, and confirm with an Apply Study Visa counsellor before committing. IRCC makes the final decision.
