Advanced College Diploma - Mechanical Engineering Technology (Optional Co-op)

The Mechanical Engineering Technology advanced diploma is the three-year technologist credential in mechanical design, with an optional co-op stream.

The first two years cover drafting and CAD, statics and strength of materials, materials and manufacturing processes, thermodynamics and fluids, and metrology. Third year moves into design responsibility: machine design and component selection, finite element analysis, advanced CAD and assembly modelling, automation and mechatronics integration, project management, engineering economics, and a capstone design project taken from specification through analysis to prototype.

The analysis content is what separates this from the two-year diploma. Being able to calculate whether a design will hold, not merely draw it, is the technologist’s core value — and the basis for OACETT certification, which is the recognised professional pathway for technologists in Ontario.

The optional co-op stream is worth taking if you are offered it: paid Canadian work experience before graduation improves both hiring outcomes and Express Entry points, and co-op students frequently convert their placement into a full-time offer.

Humber Polytechnic — formerly Humber College — is Ontario’s largest public college and a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19376943122). The North campus in Etobicoke is its main site, running technology, engineering, health science, business and skilled trades programs in purpose-built labs and shops rather than lecture halls, with three intakes a year and the deepest employer network in the Greater Toronto Area.

Its field maps to CIP 15.0805 (Mechanical engineering technology). Important: this is a college credential rather than a degree, so it is not exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction — eligibility depends on this CIP field appearing on IRCC’s eligible list when you apply. Humber publishes a PGWP-eligible program list with CIP codes; check it, and confirm with an Apply Study Visa counsellor before committing. IRCC makes the final decision.
