Program overview
The Computer Systems Technician diploma covers the infrastructure side of IT — the networks, servers and systems that applications run on — over two years with an optional co-op.
Coursework covers computer hardware and operating systems, Windows and Linux server administration, network fundamentals including TCP/IP, routing and switching, structured cabling and network installation, virtualisation and cloud infrastructure, directory services and identity management, IT service management and help desk operations, scripting for administration, and network security fundamentals. Lab work runs on physical and virtual equipment rather than simulations.
The program is aligned to widely recognised industry certifications, which matters in infrastructure hiring more than in development — employers screen on certifications as much as credentials. Graduates leaving with the diploma plus one or two industry certifications are meaningfully more employable than those with the diploma alone.
The optional co-op stream is worth taking if you are offered it: paid Canadian work experience before graduation improves both hiring outcomes and Express Entry points, and co-op students frequently convert their placement into a full-time offer.
Humber Polytechnic — formerly Humber College — is Ontario’s largest public college and a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19376943122). The North campus in Etobicoke is its main site, running technology, engineering, health science, business and skilled trades programs in purpose-built labs and shops rather than lecture halls, with three intakes a year and the deepest employer network in the Greater Toronto Area.
Its field maps to CIP 11.1001 (Network and system administration). Important: this is a college credential rather than a degree, so it is not exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction — eligibility depends on this CIP field appearing on IRCC’s eligible list when you apply. Humber publishes a PGWP-eligible program list with CIP codes; check it, and confirm with an Apply Study Visa counsellor before committing. IRCC makes the final decision.
