Program overview

The Welding Engineering Technician – Robotics diploma combines welding skill with automation, and is a markedly more technical credential than a welding certificate.

Students cover the manual welding processes — SMAW, GMAW, FCAW and GTAW — then move into robotic welding cell programming and operation, welding automation and fixturing design, weld process parameter development and optimisation, metallurgy and material selection, non-destructive testing methods, welding codes and quality standards, blueprint interpretation and weld symbol specification, and production quality systems.

Robotic welding is where the manufacturing market is moving, and it requires people who understand both the weld and the robot. That combination is rare enough that graduates command a premium over manual welders, and the credential carries an optional co-op stream.

One point international students should understand about Ontario trades: this program is a college credential, not an apprenticeship. It gives you the theory, shop skills and safety certifications employers want, and it can shorten an apprenticeship, but full trade qualification in Ontario runs through a registered apprenticeship with an employer sponsor and a certificate of qualification. Plan for that step rather than assuming graduation completes it.

Humber Polytechnic — formerly Humber College — is Ontario’s largest public college and a Designated Learning Institution (DLI O19376943122). The North campus in Etobicoke is its main site, running technology, engineering, health science, business and skilled trades programs in purpose-built labs and shops rather than lecture halls, with three intakes a year and the deepest employer network in the Greater Toronto Area.

Its field maps to CIP 48.0508 (Welding technology). Important: this is a college credential rather than a degree, so it is not exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction — eligibility depends on this CIP field appearing on IRCC’s eligible list when you apply. Humber publishes a PGWP-eligible program list with CIP codes; check it, and confirm with an Apply Study Visa counsellor before committing. IRCC makes the final decision.

Admission requirements

Who can apply (guide for international students):

  • Education: Completed Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent with a minimum 50% overall.
  • Subject requirements: Grade 12 English and Grade 12 Mathematics.
  • IELTS: Overall 6.0, no band below 5.5
  • TOEFL iBT: Total 80

Career opportunities

Automated welding is a growth area across Ontario manufacturing:

  • Robotic Welding Technician — automated cell operation and programming
  • Welding Technician — process development and support
  • Weld Quality Inspector — NDT and quality assurance
  • Automation Technician — robotic manufacturing systems
  • Manufacturing Technician — production engineering support
  • Welding Supervisor — with experience

Automotive and heavy manufacturing in Ontario run large robotic welding operations that hire these skills.
