Program overview
The Bachelor of Engineering – Software Engineering is a four-year co-op engineering degree, and carries the highest academic entry bar of Seneca’s computing programs at 70%.
The curriculum combines engineering mathematics through calculus and differential equations with programming and object-oriented design, data structures and algorithms, computer architecture, operating systems, database systems, software requirements and architecture, software design patterns, verification and testing, real-time and embedded systems, distributed systems and cloud architecture, software project management and engineering economics, professional practice and ethics, and a substantial capstone engineering project.
The distinction from a computer science degree is engineering rigour and process discipline — formal requirements, architecture, verification and accountability for systems that must not fail. Co-op produces paid Canadian engineering experience before graduation, and as a degree it is exempt from the PGWP field-of-study restriction.
Co-op is a built-in part of this degree, so you graduate with paid Canadian work terms already on your resume rather than competing for a first role with no local experience.
Newnham is Seneca’s largest campus, on Finch Avenue East in North York, with its own residence, library, athletic centre and specialised technical labs. It sits on the TTC network with subway connections, and carries the bulk of Seneca’s business, technology and engineering catalogue — which means the widest range of student clubs, services and peers of any Seneca site.
Seneca Polytechnic — formerly Seneca College — is one of Ontario’s largest public colleges and a Designated Learning Institution. Newnham is its biggest campus, on Finch Avenue East in North York, and carries the bulk of Seneca’s business, technology, engineering technology, aviation and applied science catalogue. It has its own residence, a large library and athletic centre, and sits on the TTC network with connections to the subway.
Its field maps to CIP 14.0903 (Software engineering). Because this is a degree, graduates are exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction that applies to college credentials. Full-time on-campus study and graduation remain the conditions, and IRCC makes the final decision.
