Program overview
The Honours Bachelor of Information Technology – Cybersecurity is a four-year co-op degree combining an IT foundation with security specialisation.
The IT core covers programming, data structures, operating systems, database systems, computer networks and protocols, and systems administration. The security specialisation layers on cryptography, network and infrastructure security, secure software development, ethical hacking and penetration testing, digital forensics and incident response, security operations and monitoring, cloud security, risk management and governance frameworks, and security architecture, with a capstone and co-op work terms.
Cybersecurity has a documented skills shortage across Canadian financial services, government and healthcare, so demand is real rather than speculative. As a degree the program is exempt from the PGWP field-of-study restriction, and co-op means graduating with Canadian security experience — a combination that is hard to beat in this field.
Co-op is a built-in part of this degree, so you graduate with paid Canadian work terms already on your resume rather than competing for a first role with no local experience.
Newnham is Seneca’s largest campus, on Finch Avenue East in North York, with its own residence, library, athletic centre and specialised technical labs. It sits on the TTC network with subway connections, and carries the bulk of Seneca’s business, technology and engineering catalogue — which means the widest range of student clubs, services and peers of any Seneca site.
Seneca Polytechnic — formerly Seneca College — is one of Ontario’s largest public colleges and a Designated Learning Institution. Newnham is its biggest campus, on Finch Avenue East in North York, and carries the bulk of Seneca’s business, technology, engineering technology, aviation and applied science catalogue. It has its own residence, a large library and athletic centre, and sits on the TTC network with connections to the subway.
Its field maps to CIP 11.1003 (Computer and information systems security). Because this is a degree, graduates are exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction that applies to college credentials. Full-time on-campus study and graduation remain the conditions, and IRCC makes the final decision.

Career opportunities
Cybersecurity is among the most under-supplied technical fields in Canada:
- Security Analyst — security operations centres
- Penetration Tester — offensive security and consulting
- Incident Response Analyst — breach detection and response
- Security Engineer — infrastructure and application hardening
- GRC Analyst — governance, risk and compliance
- Cloud Security Specialist — the fastest-growing niche
- Security Architect — with several years of experience
Toronto’s banks operate some of the largest security teams in the country and recruit from local degrees.
