Program overview
The Honours Bachelor of Technology – Software Development is a four-year co-op degree with an applied, industry-facing emphasis.
Coursework covers programming across multiple languages and paradigms, data structures and algorithms, object-oriented design, database design and administration, web and mobile application development, enterprise application architecture, API design and integration, cloud platforms and containerisation, DevOps and CI/CD pipelines, software testing and quality assurance, agile delivery, systems analysis, and a capstone project delivered to industry standard.
The applied framing is the differentiator against a computer science degree: less theory, more shipping. For students whose goal is professional software development rather than research or graduate study, that is the right trade. Co-op delivers paid Canadian experience before graduation and, as a degree, the program is exempt from the PGWP field-of-study restriction.
Co-op is a built-in part of this degree, so you graduate with paid Canadian work terms already on your resume rather than competing for a first role with no local experience.
Newnham is Seneca’s largest campus, on Finch Avenue East in North York, with its own residence, library, athletic centre and specialised technical labs. It sits on the TTC network with subway connections, and carries the bulk of Seneca’s business, technology and engineering catalogue — which means the widest range of student clubs, services and peers of any Seneca site.
Seneca Polytechnic — formerly Seneca College — is one of Ontario’s largest public colleges and a Designated Learning Institution. Newnham is its biggest campus, on Finch Avenue East in North York, and carries the bulk of Seneca’s business, technology, engineering technology, aviation and applied science catalogue. It has its own residence, a large library and athletic centre, and sits on the TTC network with connections to the subway.
Its field maps to CIP 11.0201 (Computer programming). Because this is a degree, graduates are exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction that applies to college credentials. Full-time on-campus study and graduation remain the conditions, and IRCC makes the final decision.
