Program overview
The General Arts – English for Academic Purposes certificate is an eight-month program combining intensive academic English with introductory college coursework.
Content covers academic reading and comprehension, essay and report writing, listening and note-taking in lecture settings, academic speaking and presentation, grammar and vocabulary for academic contexts, research and citation skills, critical thinking, and introductory general education subjects delivered in English. Successful completion can satisfy Seneca’s English proficiency requirement for admission to programs.
The practical value is the English requirement waiver: students who complete EAP successfully may progress into Seneca programs without re-sitting IELTS or an equivalent test. Two cautions for international students, though. Language programs are not PGWP-eligible on their own, and time spent in EAP is time not spent in a program that builds toward a work permit — so treat it as a bridge to entry rather than as part of your immigration timeline.
Newnham is Seneca’s largest campus, on Finch Avenue East in North York, with its own residence, library, athletic centre and specialised technical labs. It sits on the TTC network with subway connections, and carries the bulk of Seneca’s business, technology and engineering catalogue — which means the widest range of student clubs, services and peers of any Seneca site.
Seneca Polytechnic — formerly Seneca College — is one of Ontario’s largest public colleges and a Designated Learning Institution. Newnham is its biggest campus, on Finch Avenue East in North York, and carries the bulk of Seneca’s business, technology, engineering technology, aviation and applied science catalogue. It has its own residence, a large library and athletic centre, and sits on the TTC network with connections to the subway.
Its field maps to CIP 32.0109 (Second language learning). Important: this is a college credential rather than a degree, so it is not exempt from the November 2024 PGWP field-of-study restriction — eligibility depends on this CIP field appearing on IRCC’s eligible list when you apply. Seneca publishes a PGWP-eligible program list; check it, and confirm with an Apply Study Visa counsellor before committing. IRCC makes the final decision.
What it costs per year ยท indicative
Living cost is an estimate; tuition is the institute's published international fee. We confirm exact, current figures before you pay anything.
Do you qualify?
These are the published minimums. Whether your profile fits โ with your marks, gap and budget โ is exactly what a free counsellor check confirms.
Admission requirements
Who can apply (guide for international students):
- Education: Completed Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent with a minimum 50% overall.
- IELTS: Overall 6.0, no band below 5.5
- TOEFL iBT: Total 80
- PTE Academic: Overall 58
- Duolingo: 105
- GRE/GMAT: Not required.
Application fee $90 CAD. A tuition deposit is required to confirm your seat and to trigger your Ontario Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL), so deposit timing drives your study-permit timeline — confirm the current amount with an Apply Study Visa counsellor. Admissions run on a rolling basis and popular programs fill months ahead under Canada’s international seat caps.

Career opportunities
This is a language and access credential, not an employment qualification:
- Entry to Seneca diploma programs — after meeting the English requirement
- Entry to degree programs — with academic requirements also met
- Entry to graduate certificates — for degree holders
- English requirement waiver — the primary purpose
- Academic skills preparation — for college-level study
- No direct employment outcome — a bridge program only
Language programs are not PGWP-eligible on their own — plan your permit timeline around the main program.
