Master of Science - Artificial Intelligence

The MSc Artificial Intelligence requires a relevant computing background at 2:2 or above and goes materially deeper than the analytics route: machine learning and neural networks, natural language processing, computer vision, intelligent agents and search, and the mathematics underneath — linear algebra, probability and optimisation refreshed in context. DMU’s computational intelligence research group teaches into the programme, and its 12-to-18-month structure supports an extended applied stage.

Practical delivery runs on Python and the mainstream deep-learning frameworks, with GPU-backed lab infrastructure for training coursework models. Students implement algorithms from first principles before touching libraries — a deliberate pedagogical choice that pays off in interviews — then apply them to vision, language and decision problems. The final project is a substantial build-and-evaluate piece; recent themes include medical imaging classification and conversational systems.

Applicants should distinguish this course from the analytics degree next to it in the sheet: entry here expects a computing-family bachelor’s, the mathematics is treated seriously, and assessment expects implementation, not tool operation. DMU’s membership of the region’s digital-skills partnerships brings hackathons and employer challenge days onto campus, and AI cohort teams have placed well in them in recent cycles.

On employment, keep the enthusiasm calibrated: genuine ML engineering roles at entry pay £30,000–£38,000 but shortlist ruthlessly on engineering craft and portfolio depth, while the broader mass of “AI-adjacent” analyst roles behaves like the data-analytics market. This taught degree carries Graduate Route work rights on completion — 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027 onward, the older two-year term only for applications before that date — and taught-course students cannot bring dependants.
