Bachelor of Arts - English Literature (Honours)

BA (Hons) English Literature covers writing in English from medieval to contemporary: poetry, drama and the novel studied across periods, alongside critical theory, and with option pathways into areas such as gothic, postcolonial and contemporary writing.

The discipline trains sustained argument — reading closely, constructing a case from textual evidence, and writing it persuasively at length — which is precisely the capability employers describe as scarce among graduates generally, and which underpins careers well beyond publishing.

DMU’s literature teaching runs through seminar discussion where interpretations are tested aloud, and the final-year dissertation gives each student a substantial independent research project. Applicants benefit from five recorded entry windows spread across September and January admission cycles.

A frank note for families weighing this degree: literature is not vocational, and the graduates who convert it into good employment are those who accumulate evidence alongside the reading — editing the student magazine, interning at a publisher, writing reviews that appear somewhere public, or building a dissertation strong enough to send as a writing sample. Students who do those things enter publishing, communications and content work readily; students who only attend seminars compete poorly against equally literate peers who did more. Teaching remains the single largest destination, reached through the PGCE year, and international schools recruit English graduates continuously.
