Program overview
This joint degree pairs the study of literature with the practice of writing it: workshops in fiction, poetry and script alongside critical modules, so that students read as writers and write with critical awareness.
The workshop method is the course’s engine — producing work, submitting it to peer and tutor critique, and revising it repeatedly — which builds both craft and the professional resilience that receiving editorial feedback requires.
Publishing and professional-practice teaching covers submissions, agents, competitions and the realities of the market, and Entry is possible at five points per the export, with January starts alongside each September cycle.
Families sometimes worry that creative writing is self-indulgent; the honest counter is that workshop training teaches deadline production, structural revision and the ability to absorb criticism without collapse, which are professional capabilities employers name repeatedly as scarce. Graduates should nonetheless plan for a writing-adjacent income — copywriting, editorial, content, communications — while creative work develops over years rather than months, and the course’s professional-practice teaching on agents, submissions and competitions exists precisely to make that timeline navigable. Students who submit work for publication throughout the degree, rather than waiting until it feels ready, progress fastest. Competition entries and small-press submissions cost little and teach the discipline of finishing, which is why tutors encourage them from the earliest workshops onward.
Graduates enter editorial, copywriting and content roles at £19,000–£24,000 while building creative practice alongside. The honours award confers Graduate Route rights for 18 months under the post-2026 settlement, with dependants excluded across taught undergraduate study.

Who can apply (guide for international students):

- English waiver: English test waiver may be available on Medium of Instruction plus Standard 12 English at 65% or above (2015 or later, all boards) except boards of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh — assessed case by case per the ASV source.

Career opportunities
Typical first destinations for graduates:
- Author & Freelance Writer — the aspiration, pursued alongside employment
- Editorial Assistant — publishing houses and agencies
- Copywriter — agencies and in-house brand teams
- Content Producer — digital publishing
- Teacher (post-PGCE) — English teaching pathways
- Communications Officer — organisational writing roles
Reality check: almost no writer earns a living from books alone in the early years — the sustainable pattern is a writing-adjacent job that pays while the creative work develops, and students who plan for that keep writing while others stop.
