Program overview

MA Digital Design develops design practice for screens and interactive systems: interface and interaction design, user research and testing, motion and prototyping, digital storytelling and emerging platforms, culminating in a substantial self-directed project.

The arts-badged route emphasises creative direction, visual craft and conceptual development, while the science-badged sibling recorded separately weights technical implementation and systems thinking — the same £16,800 fee applies to both, and applicants should select by the work they want to be doing daily.

Teaching runs through studio projects with real briefs and critique cycles, and the course supports students in building the case-study portfolio that digital design recruitment assesses, alongside the professional practice of working with developers, stakeholders and research findings.

Portfolio expectations for this route are creative rather than technical, and applicants should present visual and conceptual work with evidence of process — research, iterations, rationale — even if it comes from print or brand design rather than digital projects specifically. The year then builds digital capability on that foundation. Students should plan to publish every project as a structured case study, since digital design recruitment is conducted almost entirely through portfolio sites rather than CVs. The £16,800 fee is shared with the science-badged sibling, and September entries run across the three admission cycles recorded in the source.

Digital product design remains one of the strongest hiring areas in the creative economy, and UK studios and in-house teams recruit continuously. As a completed master’s the award qualifies for the Graduate Route’s 18-month allowance under post-2026 rules, and taught-route students cannot bring dependants.

  • UI/UX Designer — product and platform teams
  • Digital Product Designer — the fastest-growing design role
  • Interaction Designer — service and application design
  • Motion & Interactive Designer — brand and campaign work
  • Creative Technologist — agencies and innovation teams
