Program overview
English for Academic Purposes is a four month English language program that prepares international students for academic study at Confederation College. It develops academic reading, writing, listening and speaking together with the study skills and classroom conventions that Canadian college programs assume.
The program serves applicants who hold an offer or intend to progress into a Confederation credential but do not yet meet the English requirement. Successful completion can satisfy the language requirement for onward study, which removes the need to re sit a standardised test.
Work permit status must be understood clearly. IRCC excludes programs consisting only of English or French as a second language from Post Graduation Work Permit eligibility, and any program shorter than eight months is ineligible regardless of subject. This sheet therefore records no CIP code and marks the program as not PGWP eligible. Time spent here also does not count toward the two year credential length used by the Thunder Bay Rural Community Immigration Pilot.
The recorded entry standard is Grade 12 / High School with no stated minimum percentage, with English set at IELTS 5.5 overall and no band below 1, recorded against Ontario college program code 9123. The recorded English profile is an overall IELTS of 5.5, and recorded tuition is CAD 6,238 for the four month program, by far the lowest cost item in the catalogue.
Agents should be direct with families about what this program is and is not. It is a genuine and useful English preparation course that can remove the need for a further test attempt and helps students settle before academic study begins. It is not a credential, not PGWP eligible, and not a route to permanent residence on its own. Students entering on this basis should have their onward Confederation program identified, confirmed and costed before arrival, so that the four months function as a bridge rather than an open ended stay.

Career opportunities
Typical first destinations for graduates:
- Progression to a Confederation College Program: the intended outcome
- Improved Academic English: reading, writing, listening and speaking
- Preparation for IELTS or Equivalent Testing: where required
- Campus Familiarisation: settling before the main program begins
- Academic Skills Development: research and referencing practice
- Pathway to Diploma and Certificate Study: on successful completion
Reality check: English language programs are explicitly excluded from Post Graduation Work Permit eligibility, so this course cannot form any part of a work permit or permanent residence plan on its own.
