Program overview
A fourteen week intensive English course preparing students for graduate level study, covering academic writing at postgraduate standard, research reading, seminar participation and presentation skills.
Graduate Preparation is aimed at applicants heading for a master degree who narrowly miss the English condition attached to their offer, and at CAD 11,707 for fourteen weeks it is an expensive bridge rather than a cheap one. Entry requires an existing undergraduate diploma or higher, so it is not open to school leavers, and the English entry level is IELTS 4.0 rather than the 6.5 the academic programmes demand.
Graduate Preparation is an English language programme at Vancouver Island University, and it is important to understand that Graduate Preparation is not a degree, diploma or certificate at academic level. Language training does not lead to a Post-Graduation Work Permit in Canada under any circumstances, so Graduate Preparation only makes sense as preparation attached to a confirmed academic offer. A British Columbia attestation letter is still required with the study permit application for Graduate Preparation.
Admission to Graduate Preparation requires a recognised undergraduate diploma at 50 percent. The English requirement is IELTS 4.0 with no band below 3.5, and tuition for Graduate Preparation is recorded at CAD 11,707 a year with a CAD 156 application fee, with a recorded initial deposit of CAD 10,000. No scholarship is recorded against Graduate Preparation. Seven windows a cycle, across September, January and May. Apply Study Visa manages the Graduate Preparation application, the deposit, the letter of acceptance and the Canadian study permit as one process.

Admission requirements
Who can apply (guide for international students):
- Education: A completed undergraduate diploma carrying the credits required for entry to the final stage of this award, in a related subject.
- English (meet any one): IELTS Academic 4.0 overall with no band below 3.5, TOEFL iBT 31, or the Duolingo English Test at 60. PTE Academic is not accepted for this programme.
- Application and deposit: An application fee of CAD 156 applies. An initial deposit of CAD 10,000 is recorded, which is substantial and should be confirmed in writing before any money is sent.
- Scholarship: No scholarship is recorded against this programme. Budget the full tuition.
- Programme availability: VIU is working through a published Deficit Mitigation Plan and has cancelled or suspended a number of programmes since 2025. Confirm in writing that this programme is running for your intake before you pay a deposit.
- Work permit: Graduate Preparation is language training, so it does NOT lead to a Post-Graduation Work Permit. A British Columbia attestation letter is still required, and no spousal open work permit arises from it.
- Study permit: Apply Study Visa handles the British Columbia attestation letter, the study permit application and the biometrics appointment with you.

- Progression to a Master Degree: the sole purpose of this course
- Improved Test Readiness: for a further IELTS attempt
- Academic Writing at Graduate Level: research and argument
- Seminar Confidence: for Canadian postgraduate teaching
- Research Reading Skill: handling academic sources
- University Familiarisation: before the main programme starts
Reality check: this is language training and carries no work permit rights whatsoever, so it only makes sense attached to a confirmed offer for a master degree at the same university.
