Program overview

A three to four month upgrading programme in the school subjects required for programme entry, covering mathematics, sciences and English at the level NAIT admission requires.

Academic Upgrading accepts Grade 10, which is the lowest education requirement in our entire Canadian catalogue, and it exists to fix missing subject prerequisites rather than a low overall average. It also lists seven entry windows a cycle and runs only three to four months, so it can fit into a gap in your plan rather than costing you a whole year.

Academic Upgrading is taught at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton. Understand what Academic Upgrading is before applying: it is a academic upgrading programme, not a credential, and it does NOT lead to a Post-Graduation Work Permit under any circumstances. You can hold a study permit while taking Academic Upgrading and progress into a diploma or degree afterwards, and it is that credential which would carry work permit rights. An Alberta attestation letter is still required with the study permit application for Academic Upgrading.

Admission to Academic Upgrading requires Grade 10 or Class 10 at 50 percent. The English requirement is no English test required, and tuition for Academic Upgrading is recorded at CAD 9,360 a year with a CAD 150 application fee. No scholarship is recorded against Academic Upgrading. Academic Upgrading lists seven entry windows across September, January and May. Apply Study Visa manages the Academic Upgrading application, the deposit, the letter of acceptance and the Canadian study permit as one process.

Admission requirements

Who can apply (guide for international students):

  • Education: Grade 10 or Class 10. This is the lowest education requirement at NAIT.
  • English: No English test is required to enter this programme, because teaching English is what the programme itself does. Your level is assessed on arrival and you are placed accordingly.
  • Application and deposit: An application fee of CAD 150 applies. Confirm the tuition deposit and its refundability in writing before any money is transferred.
  • Scholarship: No scholarship is recorded against this programme. Budget the full tuition.
  • Work permit: Academic Upgrading does NOT support a Post-Graduation Work Permit, because it is a academic upgrading programme rather than a credential and no study on Academic Upgrading counts toward work permit eligibility. Treat Academic Upgrading as a route into a diploma or degree and check the work permit position of that instead. No spousal open work permit arises, because that needs a master programme of 16 months or longer and NAIT awards none. An Alberta attestation letter is required with the study permit application.
  • Study permit: Apply Study Visa handles the Alberta attestation letter, the study permit application and the biometrics appointment with you.

Documents you'll need typical · we confirm yours

  • Valid passport (6+ months validity)

  • Statement of Purpose (SOP)

Getting documents right is the #1 reason applications succeed or get refused — our team checks every file before submission.

Career opportunities

Typical destinations for graduates:

  • Entry to a NAIT Diploma: the intended destination
  • Missing Prerequisites Completed: mathematics and sciences
  • Improved Subject Grades: for competitive programmes
  • Canadian Classroom Experience: before a full course load
  • Alternative Programme Entry: where direct entry was not met
  • Progression Planning: toward a chosen credential

Reality check: at three to four months this is short and comparatively cheap, but it produces no credential and no work permit, so it is only worth doing if a named programme follows it.
