Program overview
A two month intensive English programme at the upper levels, covering advanced academic reading and writing, listening and note taking, presentation skills and preparation for programme entry.
English as a Second Language - Intensive is recorded at CAD 4,632, the cheapest programme at NAIT, and it lists fourteen entry windows a year, more than any other route here.
English as a Second Language - Intensive (Levels 5 and 6) is taught at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in Edmonton. Understand what English as a Second Language - Intensive (Levels 5 and 6) is before applying: it is a two month intensive English programme, not a credential, and it does NOT lead to a Post-Graduation Work Permit under any circumstances. You can hold a study permit while taking English as a Second Language - Intensive (Levels 5 and 6) and progress into a diploma or degree afterwards, and it is that credential which would carry work permit rights. An Alberta attestation letter is still required with the study permit application for English as a Second Language - Intensive (Levels 5 and 6).
Entry to English as a Second Language - Intensive (Levels 5 and 6) is Grade 12 or Class 12 at 50 percent or above. The English requirement is IELTS 5.0 with 5.0 in every band, and tuition for English as a Second Language - Intensive (Levels 5 and 6) is recorded at CAD 4,632 a year with a CAD 1025 application fee. No scholarship is recorded against English as a Second Language - Intensive (Levels 5 and 6). English as a Second Language - Intensive (Levels 5 and 6) lists fourteen entry windows a cycle, by far the most frequent intake pattern at NAIT. Apply Study Visa manages the English as a Second Language - Intensive (Levels 5 and 6) application, the deposit, the letter of acceptance and the Canadian study permit as one process.

Admission requirements
Who can apply (guide for international students):
- Education: Grade 12 or Class 12 at the percentage stated for this programme.
- English: IELTS Academic 5.0 overall with 5.0 in every band; TOEFL iBT 46 with 12 in every section; or the Duolingo English Test at 90. PTE Academic is NOT accepted. This is the lowest English bar at NAIT.
- Application and deposit: An application fee of CAD 1025 applies. Confirm the tuition deposit and its refundability in writing before any money is transferred.
- Scholarship: No scholarship is recorded against this programme. Budget the full tuition.
- Work permit: English as a Second Language - Intensive (Levels 5 and 6) does NOT support a Post-Graduation Work Permit, because it is a two month intensive English programme rather than a credential and no study on English as a Second Language - Intensive (Levels 5 and 6) counts toward work permit eligibility. Treat English as a Second Language - Intensive (Levels 5 and 6) as a route into a diploma or degree and check the work permit position of that instead. No spousal open work permit arises, because that needs a master programme of 16 months or longer and NAIT awards none. An Alberta attestation letter is required with the study permit application.
- Study permit: Apply Study Visa handles the Alberta attestation letter, the study permit application and the biometrics appointment with you.

Career opportunities
Typical destinations for graduates:
- Entry to a NAIT Programme: the intended destination
- Rapid English Improvement: two month intensive format
- Programme Entry Preparation: meeting the language bar
- Alternative to an IELTS Retake: building the skill
- Bridging Between Terms: using a short gap productively
- Progression to Full Study: after completion
Reality check: two months is short and the fee is low, but the CAD 1,025 application fee is more than a fifth of the tuition itself, and the programme produces no credential and no work permit.
