Program overview

A two year college diploma in practical nursing, covering anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, clinical skills, health assessment across the lifespan and extensive supervised clinical placement.

Two things stand out. This is the only programme at Brockville requiring 6.5 in every IELTS band rather than 6.0, and it is the only one refusing the Duolingo English Test.

College Diploma - Practical Nursing is taught at St. Lawrence College Brockville campus, a public Ontario college. The practical nursing diploma sits below degree level, so a work permit depends on its field of study. St. Lawrence records the practical nursing diploma under CIP 51.3901 and lists it among its PGWP-aligned programmes, which supports a permit of up to three years. IRCC alone decides, so verify 51.3901 against the current eligible list before paying for the practical nursing diploma. Ontario also requires a provincial attestation letter before the practical nursing diploma can support a study permit.

Applicants to College Diploma - Practical Nursing need Grade 12 or equivalent with a minimum of 50 percent. The English requirement is IELTS 6.5 with 6.5 in every band, and tuition for the practical nursing diploma is recorded at CAD 16,920. St. Lawrence charges a CAD 100 application fee, and no scholarship is recorded against the practical nursing diploma. The practical nursing diploma lists four entry windows, and note that the earliest is January 2027 rather than this September. Apply Study Visa manages your the practical nursing diploma application, the deposit, the offer, the attestation letter and the Canadian study permit as one process.

Admission requirements

Who can apply (guide for international students):

  • Education: Grade 12 or equivalent at the percentage stated for this programme.
  • English (meet any one): IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.5 in every band, not 6.0; TOEFL iBT 83; or PTE Academic 60. The Duolingo English Test is NOT accepted for this programme.
  • Application and deposit: St. Lawrence charges a CAD 100 application fee. Confirm the tuition deposit and its refundability in writing before any money is transferred.
  • Scholarship: No scholarship is recorded against this programme. Budget the full tuition.
  • Additional requirement: The Duolingo English Test is NOT accepted. Registered Practical Nurse is a protected title in Ontario requiring registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario and the REx-PN examination. A vulnerable sector police check, immunisation records and clinical placement clearance are required before placement. These take longer to arrange from overseas than most applicants expect, so begin them as soon as you hold an offer. St. Lawrence publishes its aligned list under a June 2025 heading and notes the IRCC codes were last updated in July 2025. That is older than the lists other Ontario colleges publish, so verify this CIP code against IRCC directly before paying any deposit.
  • Work rights: St. Lawrence lists the practical nursing diploma as PGWP-aligned under CIP 51.3901, supporting a work permit of up to three years. Verify the code against the IRCC list before paying. A PGWP also requires a language test at CLB 5 in all four abilities for college credentials, taken within two years of applying. This is separate from the English test you need for admission. No dependant work permit.
  • Study permit: Apply Study Visa prepares the attestation letter request, the financial evidence and the Canadian study permit submission with you.
