Mechanical Engineering Technician - Industrial Maintenance (Millwright)

Conveyors, crushers, pumps and turbines only keep running because a millwright aligns, lubricates and rebuilds them. Mechanical Engineering Technician - Industrial Maintenance (Millwright) is a two-year Ontario College Diploma of four semesters, taught full time at Cambrian College’s Barrydowne campus in Sudbury.

Semester one covers Tools, Materials & Fasteners, Precision Measuring Equipment, Industrial Indoctrination & Safety, Technical Drawing & Schematics, Rigging and Hoist, Welding I and Trade Math I. In semester two you study Bearing Seals & Lubrication, Electric & Electronic Controls I, Machine Installation, Millwright Machining I and Welding II. Semester three adds Material Handling System, Power Transmission Systems I, Millwright Machining II and Fluid Power I, and the final term brings Pumps, Valves & Piping, Proactive, Preventive & Predictive Maintenance, Industrial Automated Control, Prime Movers and Machinery, Fluid Power II and Welding & Fabrication.

Cambrian has the only onsite material handling loop in an Ontario college, so you practise conveyor installation and repair on real equipment rather than models. Machining, welding and rigging are spread across all four terms, and the diploma equates to three levels of theory toward your millwright apprenticeship Certificate of Qualification. Domestic students can take an optional paid co-op, with past employers including SNOLAB and Ontario Power Generation, and selected students compete at Skills Ontario. Articulation agreements may give credit toward further college or university study.

Graduates of Cambrian’s millwright diploma work as millwright apprentice, industrial mechanic, maintenance technician, conveyor systems technician, hydraulic and fluid power technician and plant maintenance planner in hydro and nuclear stations, mines, forestry, manufacturing, steel, pharmaceutical, automotive and food plants. It suits mechanically curious people who like precision work and want a skilled trade with industrial reach.
