Hoping for a seat in a nursing or health sciences programme but missing some of the science? Cambrian College’s Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees is a one-year Ontario College Certificate of two semesters, taught at the Barrydowne campus in Sudbury, that rebuilds your biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics for competitive health programmes.
Semester one covers Biology I, Science Chemistry I, Pre Health Math I, Technical Reading & Writing for the Health Science and Introduction to Medical Terminology and Health Professions, with Health Science Physics I offered as an elective. Semester two advances to Biology II, Physical Chemistry, Organic and Biological Chemistry, Advanced Pre-Health Math, Research & Writing/Health Sciences and Professionalism and Ethics in Health Careers, with Health Science Physics II as the second physics option. By the end you have the medical vocabulary, science foundations and academic writing that first-year health courses expect.
Because the certificate is designed as a bridge, the physics electives let you shape the year around the programme you plan to enter next, while Introduction to Medical Terminology and Health Professions helps you compare health careers before you commit. Professionalism and Ethics in Health Careers introduces the conduct expected on clinical placements later on. Graduates may apply to all of Cambrian’s health sciences and nursing programmes, as well as selected community services programmes, and may receive credit for courses they have already completed. Starts are offered in January, May and September.
This certificate leads into Cambrian programmes that train practical nurses, paramedics, medical laboratory technologists, medical radiation technologists, dental hygienists and occupational therapist and physiotherapist assistants. It suits students whose high school science marks or subject choices fall short of health programme requirements, mature learners returning to study, and anyone who wants a structured year to confirm a health career.

Admission requirements
Admission requirements:
- Education: Grade 12 with English and Grade 11 Maths, minimum 50%.
- English: IELTS 6.0 (no band below 5.5), TOEFL iBT 80, PTE 58 or Duolingo 105.
- PGWP: Yes (CIP 51.1199), about 8 months (matches programme length). Needs CLB 5. International seats are subject to space availability.
- Before you apply: CAD 95 application fee. Ontario PAL required. Visa refused? Full refund less CAD 250 if you send the refusal within 10 business days.
