Program overview
Can you write the press release, shoot the photos and build the web page for the same campaign? Media Communications is a two-year Ontario College Diploma, delivered over four semesters at Cambrian College’s Barrydowne campus in Sudbury, that trains you to handle design, writing, multimedia and digital marketing for organisations of every size.
Semester one introduces Digital Design I, Digital Imaging I, Introduction to Media Communications, Media in Society, MS Office for Communications and Workplace Communication Skills. Semester two builds with Digital Design II, Digital Imaging II, Multimedia I, Workplace Writing Skills, Introduction to Digital Marketing and Introduction to Business Management. In semester three you take Website Design, Accessible Design, Media Writing I, Multimedia II, Introduction to Social Media Marketing and Project Communication Management, and semester four brings Media Writing II, Multimedia III, Content Management Systems and the Communications Agency.
Students work in Adobe Creative Cloud on their own computers and use a mirrorless or DSLR camera for imaging and multimedia courses. Throughout the diploma you apply your skills in the field on projects for real clients, and the final-semester Communications Agency course operates like a working agency. Your best work appears in Cambrian’s annual online portfolio exhibit, and articulation agreements provide routes into university study for graduates who want to continue.
Graduates move into roles such as communications coordinator, social media coordinator, content creator, digital marketing assistant, web content specialist and multimedia producer. Media Communications suits versatile storytellers who like switching between writing, photography, video and web layout, and who want a portfolio of client work ready when they graduate.
