Child and Youth Care at Cambrian College in Sudbury is an Ontario College Advanced Diploma, a three-year credential whose compressed academic semesters let you complete all six semesters in two years, preparing you for therapeutic work with children, youth and families.
Semester one covers Fundamentals of Child & Youth Care, Group Process & Pers. Devel., Behaviour Management Skills, Child and Adolescent Development and Principles of Psychology. Semester two moves into Neglect & Abuse, Mental Health & Diversity, Concurrent Disorders, Mental Health & Addictions, Therapeutic Play and Counselling and Interviewing I, with Field Placement Seminar I preparing you for practice. After your first placement, semester four adds Behaviour Programming, Child Law and Legislation and Family Intervention. The final academic semester brings CYC In The Education Sector, Rights and Advocacy, Counselling and Interviewing II, Trauma and Trends in CYC and Supporting Special Populations in CYC.
Practice sits at the centre of Cambrian’s Child and Youth Care programme: two full-semester placements, Field Placement I and Field Placement II, give you more than 900 supervised hours in settings such as schools, hospitals, mental health organizations, child welfare agencies, youth justice programmes and out-of-home care. The programme is accredited by the Child and Youth Care Educational Accreditation Board and aligns with the Ontario Association of Child and Youth Care Code of Ethics. Graduates can also earn a second diploma in another Cambrian Community Services programme in as little as one additional year.
Graduates work as child and youth care practitioners in elementary and secondary schools, Children’s Aid Societies, youth justice facilities, residential treatment centres, hospital mental health units and community agencies. Admission requirements
Admission requirements:
- Education: Grade 12 with English, minimum 50%.
- English: IELTS 6.0 (no band below 5.5), TOEFL iBT 80, PTE 58 or Duolingo 105.
- Also needed: Police check with vulnerable sector screening, immunisations and first aid/CPR before placement.
- PGWP: Yes (CIP 44.0702), up to 3 years. Needs CLB 5.
- Before you apply: CAD 95 application fee. Ontario PAL required. Visa refused? Full refund less CAD 250 if you send the refusal within 10 business days.
