IT Business Analysis

Every software project needs someone who can translate what the business wants into what developers build. IT Business Analysis is a one-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate at Cambrian College in Sudbury, three semesters long, for diploma and degree holders who want to become that bridge between users and technical teams.

Semester one builds the analyst’s core toolkit through Requirements Development, Business Process Management, Software Project Management, Software Engineering Concepts, Business Management and Business Communication Strategies, with an Indigenous Business Workshop. Semester two looks at how organisations change their systems, with Data and AI Literacy for Business Analysts, Modern Software Development, Data Management, Enterprise Solutions, Digital Transformation and Software Product Development. By the end you can elicit and document requirements, model workflows, manage a software project and judge where data and AI tools fit.

The third semester is a seven-week work-integrated learning experience: either the IT BA Work Placement or the IT BA Capstone Course. Past placements include IVEY Immigration and Employment Services Inc., where a student worked on CRM implementation, and Sofvie Inc., where the focus was data analysis. The first two semesters can also be completed part time for working professionals, with only the work-integrated learning term requiring full-time study, and articulation agreements with colleges and universities offer further study options after the IT Business Analysis certificate.

Graduates work as business analysts, business systems analysts, requirements analysts, process improvement analysts and junior product owners in private companies, not-for-profit organisations and government departments, and experienced entrepreneurs may set up as independent IT consultants. The certificate suits graduates of business, computing or related programmes who communicate clearly and enjoy solving organisational problems with technology.
