Program overview
Addiction and mental illness rarely arrive alone, and the workers who help people recover need to understand both. Addictions and Mental Health is a one-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate at Cambrian College in Sudbury, three semesters long, that prepares diploma and degree holders to support clients living with concurrent disorders.
Semester one covers Concurrent Disorders, Mental Health & Addictions, Case Management in Professional Practice, Foundations of Therapeutic Counselling, Community Integration: Addictions and Mental Health, Diversity Informed Practices and Impulse Control Disorders and Behavioral Addictions. Semester two deepens your practice with Concurrent Disorders and Mental Health II, Wellness Coaching, Trauma Informed Practices, Cognitive-Behavioral Strategies in Practice and Addictions and Mental Health Lifespan and Special Populations, while Field Preparation Seminar readies you for the final term. You finish able to assess clients, plan care, use counselling and CBT techniques and work with youth, seniors and other special populations.
In semester three you complete either a six-week Field Placement or a Capstone Course; placement partners have included Health Sciences North and the Canadian Mental Health Association. The programme covers all of the formal education hours needed for voluntary certification with the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation, with further clinical hours completed after graduation. Articulation agreements with colleges and universities may also give Addictions and Mental Health graduates credit towards further study.
Graduates work as addictions and mental health workers in community mental health agencies, hospitals, treatment and recovery centres, youth and seniors mental health services, correctional settings, aftercare programmes and land-based treatment facilities. The certificate suits graduates of social service, psychology, nursing or justice programmes who are compassionate, non-judgemental and ready for demanding frontline work.

- Education: A college diploma, advanced diploma or degree, minimum 50%, or five years of related work experience.
- English: IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0), TOEFL iBT 84, PTE 61 or Duolingo 120.
- PGWP: Yes (CIP 51.1501), about 1 year (matches programme length). Needs CLB 5.
- Before you apply: CAD 95 application fee. Ontario PAL required. Visa refused? Full refund less CAD 250 if you send the refusal within 10 business days.
