Program overview
Interested in helping people plan retirements, mortgages and investments? Cambrian College’s Business - Finance programme is a two-year Ontario College Diploma in four semesters, taught at the Barrydowne campus in Sudbury and described by the college as the only programme of its kind in northern Ontario. It is designed to start your journey towards becoming a financial planner in Ontario.
Year one builds business foundations: Microeconomics, College Communications, Spreadsheets for Business, Business Professionalism, Introduction to Business Management, Introduction to Accounting and Business Mathematics in semester one, then Financial Accounting, CSR and Ethics, Financial Mathematics, Business Research Methods, Macroeconomics and Foundations of Marketing in semester two. Year two is almost entirely finance. Semester three covers Financial Planning, Insurance and Risk Management, Retirement Planning, Canadian Securities I, Tax Planning and Law and Estate Planning. Semester four brings Debt Management, Integrated Financial Planning, Retirement Education Planning, Mortgage Agent, Mutual Funds in Canada and Canadian Securities II.
The second year concentrates on financial services industry regulations, credit and debt management and financial analysis, along with registered retirement and education plans, government benefit plans, investments, taxation and insurance. Courses named Mortgage Agent, Mutual Funds in Canada and Canadian Securities I and II give you specific grounding in the mortgage, fund and securities products you will meet at a bank or planning firm. The programme also develops the interpersonal skills needed to explain a financial plan to a client. Graduates with a 2.5 GPA receive advanced standing and direct entry into year two of Cambrian’s Honours BBA or BBA degree.
Graduates find entry and intermediate-level jobs in banking, the mortgage industry, personal financial planning, securities trading and insurance, in roles such as financial services representative, mortgage agent, insurance advisor, investment associate and financial planning assistant. Business - Finance suits organised students who like numbers and want client-facing work in Canadian financial services.
