Media and Communications

From a live radio show to a short documentary, today’s storytellers need to handle every screen and speaker. Assiniboine’s Media and Communications diploma is a two-year, 121-credit programme based at the Victoria Avenue East campus in Brandon, taught through the college’s Centre for Creative Media.

Year one gives you a broad production toolkit: Digital Audio & Radio 1 and 2, Digital Toolkit 1 and 2, Digital Video, Film and Factual 1, Multiplatform Journalism 1, Storytelling, Unscripted Video Production 1 and the Production Lab. In year two you deepen those skills through Digital Audio & Radio 3, Digital Toolkit 3, Film and Factual 2, Multiplatform Journalism 2, Unscripted Video Production 2 and Business Marketing & Branding, and you choose electives such as Advanced Radio, Advanced Journalism, Advanced Digital Audio, Live Multi-Cam, Photography & Cinematography or Film and Factual Production. The 18-credit Capstone brings it together in a major project.

At the Centre for Creative Media you work with cameras, audio boards, microphones and professional editing software, and you bring your own laptop to the programme’s specifications. After the Capstone, eligible students with a cumulative weighted GPA of 2.0 or higher complete an eight-week, 320-hour unpaid practicum with a related media firm. Articulation agreements with other colleges and universities can give credit toward further study.

Media and Communications graduates find work as video producers and editors, radio hosts and audio producers, multiplatform journalists, camera operators, live event technicians and content creators, with production houses, news outlets, film companies, radio stations, audiovisual firms and event venues, or freelance. It suits curious, organised people who like deadlines, and entry needs English 40S at 65% or higher.
