Program overview

Not sure yet whether accounting, marketing or human resources is your path? The Business Certificate at Suncrest College lets you sample all of them in one 32-week, two-semester programme, brokered through Saskatchewan Polytechnic and taught at Suncrest’s Yorkton campus in a class of up to 30 learners. It builds a foundation in the concepts behind accounting, marketing, management, human resources, insurance, finance and entrepreneurship.

Semester one opens with BUS 104 Introduction to Business, ECON 120 Microeconomics and ACCT 122 Introductory Financial Accounting 1, alongside ADMN 220 Organizational Behaviour, which examines values, team dynamics, leadership and change inside real organisations. BCOM 105 Business Communications, COMP 120 Business Software and Decision Tools and CAPL-130 Career Planning and Development sharpen your writing, spreadsheet and job-search skills. Semester two moves on to ACCT 125 Introductory Financial Accounting 2, ACCT 136 Automated Accounting, MKTG 120 Marketing, LAW 220 Commercial Law, FIN 100 Personal Finance and INDG-100 Introduction to Indigenous Studies.

Because the courses are Saskatchewan Polytechnic credits, this certificate is also the first year of the Business Management Diploma, and one more year can lead to a specialised diploma in accountancy, financial services, human resources, insurance, management or marketing. The page notes that the certificate and diploma are fully transferable to the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Regina, and the diploma is accredited by the Canadian Institute of Management, meeting the study requirements for the Certified in Management (CIM) designation. Yorkton classes are small, and the same programme is streamed live to a proctored room at the Melfort campus.

Graduates of the Yorkton Business Certificate step into entry-level roles such as management trainee, financial officer, accounting clerk, administrative assistant and sales representative, in banking, retail, real estate, insurance and government offices. It suits school leavers who want a broad first year of business before choosing a specialism, and anyone planning to run a family farm business or start their own venture.
