Bachelor of Applied Science: Environmental Management

Already hold an environmental diploma or related degree and want the credentials to manage a reclamation or monitoring project yourself? Lakeland’s Bachelor of Applied Science: Environmental Management is a two-year applied degree built for exactly that step. It runs from Lakeland’s Vermilion campus, with eight months of face-to-face study followed by a long industry practicum.

Year 1 of the Environmental Management degree runs from September to April and deepens the technical skills a diploma started. You work in advanced soil science, carry out Phase 1, 2 and 3 environmental site assessments, and write land use and regional planning reports. Coursework also covers reclamation and remediation project management, water and wastewater management, air emissions monitoring, environmental compliance inspections and sampling to QA/QC standards, the tasks that separate a field technician from a project lead.

Year 2 is an 8-month practicum with an environmental employer, usually from May to December, and Lakeland reports that most placements are paid; staff help you find a host. Recent students placed with Cenovus Energy and SLR Consulting designed capstone projects such as tracking wetland reclamation with LiDAR and GIS or assessing hydrocarbon impact at service stations, then presented results in a technical report and at Lakeland’s Conference on Environmental Management. Second-year and applied degree students also join the September Field Week of trips across Alberta, and graduates are recognised by ECO Canada for the Environmental Professional in Training designation.

Environmental Management graduates work across oil and gas, mining, pulp and paper, forestry and agriculture as soils and vegetation reclamation specialists, contaminant remediation specialists, compliance inspectors, air or water monitoring specialists, industrial waste managers and municipal environmental coordinators. The degree suits diploma holders who want project responsibility and a route towards full Environmental Professional status.
