Commercial Agriculture Production (Livestock) Post-Bachelor Certificate

Already hold a science or engineering degree but want to manage cattle rather than read about them? Lakeland College’s Post-Bachelor Certificate in Commercial Agriculture Production, Livestock stream, is a one-year, 30-credit programme for degree holders, taught face to face at Lakeland’s Vermilion campus.

The livestock stream opens with Introduction to Animal Science and Business Communications, which maps career paths and livestock marketing systems, alongside Animal Handling, Welfare and Ethics for low-stress handling and restraint, and Introduction to Diseases and Treatments for disease transmission in farm animals. Range & Forage Management covers grazing and forage production, Livestock Marketing and Sales and Agricultural Sales build the selling side, and Beef Sustainability and Technology applies it all through case studies and industry networking. You then choose at least three electives from Beef Production, Cow-calf Management, Feedlot Production, Dairy Cattle Production, Dairy Herd Management I and II, and Livestock Production Management, which covers sheep, goats, pigs and poultry.

Livestock courses include lab sessions in which students work directly with herds and flocks, and the programme draws on the Student-Managed Farm, Powered by New Holland, for hands-on learning with animals, equipment and technology. Because the electives span cow-calf, feedlot, dairy and smaller species, you can shape the year around the livestock sector you plan to enter, from ranch-scale beef to supply-managed dairy. Lakeland notes that this certificate is not a pathway into a two-year agriculture diploma; it is built as a direct bridge from an existing bachelor’s degree into commercial livestock work.

Lakeland names technical sales representatives, production advisors, research technicians, agricultural service board fieldmen and producers among graduate roles. In the livestock stream that can mean a feedlot or cow-calf herd manager, a dairy herd technician, a livestock sales representative for a feed or genetics company, or a livestock production advisor. It suits engineers and science graduates who want practical Canadian livestock experience in a single year.
