Aircraft Maintenance Engineer

Before any aircraft leaves the ground, a licensed engineer has signed off on its airframe, engines and systems. RRC Polytech’s Aircraft Maintenance Engineer diploma is a two-year, four-term programme approved by Transport Canada, and it is taught at the Stevenson Campus beside Winnipeg’s airport rather than at Notre Dame, so you train alongside working hangars on airplanes and helicopters.

Term 1 lays the groundwork with Aircraft Ground Handling, Aircraft Hardware, Aircraft Structural Materials, Electrical Systems 1, Aviation Math and Physics, Hydraulic & Pneumatic Systems, Human Factors and Structures, Assembly and Rigging 1. Term 2 moves into Turbine Engines 1, Reciprocating Engines 1, Airframe Fuel Systems, Landing Gear, Instruments, Aircraft Weight & Balance and Rotary Wing Theory of Flight. The second year adds Non-Destructive Testing, Environmental Systems, Dynamic Drive Systems, CARs and Metallic Structures, then Propellers, Turbine Engines 3, Reciprocating Engines 3, Composites, Vibration Analysis, Avionics and Maintenance Procedures.

Stevenson Campus workshops and labs let you work on real aircraft, from turbine and propeller-powered planes to helicopters, with modern tools and inspection equipment. Graduates receive a Letter of Accreditation carrying a Transport Canada number, and the programme credits 19 of the 48 months of maintenance experience needed for the AME ’M’ licence. The diploma is also accredited by the Canadian Forces for its Non-Commissioned Member Subsidized Education Plan. Applicants must first pass the Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Readiness Assessment (AMERA).

Graduates join national and regional airlines, helicopter operators, air charter firms, approved maintenance organisations and engine overhaul shops as aircraft maintenance technicians, aerospace inspectors, turbine engine technicians, aircraft assemblers, aerospace sheet metal workers and quality assurance staff. The programme suits mechanically minded, safety-conscious people who enjoy precise, documented work and want a licensed career in aviation.
