Construction Management

Who keeps a bridge, a hospital wing or a housing project on schedule, on budget and safe? RRC Polytech’s Construction Management programme trains those people. It is a four-year Bachelor of Technology taught at the Notre Dame Campus in northwest Winnipeg, running 44 months in total with three paid co-op work terms built in.

Year 1 grounds you in Algebra & Trigonometry, Statics, Construction Graphics, Surveying 1 and 2, Strength of Materials and Construction Safety. Year 2 adds Structural Analysis 1 and 2, Infrastructure Design 1 and 2, Building Systems and Codes and Materials Science & Testing. Year 3 is the management core: Construction Planning & Scheduling, Quantity Surveying, Construction Law and Documents, Estimating - Heavy Construction or Building Construction and Project Costing Control & Accounting. Year 4 finishes with Engineering Economics, Quality Control, Risk Management, Water & Wastewater and a two-part applied research capstone.

After each of the first three years you complete a six-month co-op placement, adding up to 18 months of construction work found through RRC Polytech’s Job Central postings. Classes use AutoCAD and Revit, and electives include Building Information Modeling (BIM), Building Green and Manitoba Energy Code for Buildings. The degree helps you prepare for the Canadian Construction Association Gold Seal exams, the LEED Green Associate exam and the national exam of the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (CIQS). Exit points award a Civil Technician Certificate after Year 1, a Construction Technician Certificate after Year 2 and a Construction Technology Diploma after Year 3.

Graduates work as project managers for civil or building contractors, site inspectors, estimators, contract administrators, quality control technicians in materials testing and technical sales representatives, and with experience move into middle and senior management. The degree suits students strong in maths and science who want construction management training grounded in real site work across heavy, industrial, commercial and residential building.
