Program overview
An aircraft bracket, a medical research component and a mining truck part all begin as raw metal and a set of instructions. RRC Polytech’s CNC Machinist Technician programme is a one-year, two-term certificate at the Notre Dame Campus in northwest Winnipeg that teaches you to turn engineering drawings into precise parts on both manual and computer-controlled machines.
Term 1 grounds you in the machine shop: Machine Shop Tools and Safety, Milling Machine Operations 1, Lathe Operations 1 and Lathe Operations 2, supported by Interpreting Engineering Drawings, Mathematics for Manufacturing, Science for Manufacturing, Communication Strategies, WHMIS and General Safety Training. Term 2 moves to computer control with Intro to CNC Machines, CNC Manual Programming, CNC Machining Centre Operation 1 and CNC Turning Centre Operation 1, while Quality Inspection With GD&T and CMM and Lean Manufacturing show how precision parts are checked and produced efficiently. Electives include Intro to Plastics Manufacturing, Introduction to Non-Destructive Testing and Welding: VR, Gas and MIG.
The machine shop is where the programme happens. You learn safe, correct handling of tools and equipment and how to set up and run manual milling machines, lathes and CNC machining and turning centres, then inspect your own work with coordinate measuring. Term 2 includes AC-204 Machinist Theory Level 1 Accreditation, awarded to students who finish with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and graduates who meet Apprenticeship Manitoba requirements can apply for credit towards Level 1 of the Machinist apprenticeship.
Graduates of CNC Machinist Technician work as CNC machinists, CNC operators, general machinists, machine setup technicians, quality inspectors and apprentice machinists in aerospace, medical research, manufacturing, mining and transportation. It suits patient, mechanically minded people who like measuring twice, reading drawings closely and seeing a finished part come off the machine.

Admission requirements:
- Education: Grade 12 with English and Maths.
- English: IELTS 6.0 (no band below 5.5), TOEFL iBT 78 (17 in each) or 4.0 on the 2026 scale, PTE 54 (50 in each) or Duolingo 115 (95 in each).
- PGWP: Yes (CIP 48.0510), about 1 year. Needs CLB 5.
- Before you apply: CAD 160 application fee. CAD 5,000 deposit within 14 days of the offer, refunded on a study permit refusal if claimed within 30 days. Manitoba PAL required.
