English for Academic and Professional Purposes (EAPP)

Is your English good enough for daily life but not yet for a Canadian lecture hall? English for Academic and Professional Purposes (EAPP) is RRC Polytech’s full-time English pathway, taught at the Exchange District Campus downtown and awarding a Statement of Achievement. Each level runs for 15 weeks, and you start at Level 3, 4 or 5 depending on your language assessment.

Every level pairs a listening and speaking course with a reading and writing course, from Level 3 Listening and Speaking Skills and Level 3 Reading and Writing Skills through their Level 4 equivalents. At Level 5 the core splits into four courses: Level 5: Academic Listening for College Success, Level 5: Academic and Professional Speaking Skills, Level 5: Academic Reading for College Success and Level 5: Academic and Professional Writing Skills. Targeted electives such as Grammar 2, Pronunciation 2, Reading and Vocabulary and Conversation and Discussion 2 let you work on the exact skill holding you back.

You study 18 hours a week in EAPP, 12 in core skills and 6 in targeted skills, with classes scheduled between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. from Monday to Friday. A grade of at least 70% moves you up a level. The Centre for Newcomer Integration runs weekly events, volunteering opportunities, field trips and guest speakers, with activities at both the Exchange District and Notre Dame campuses, so English practice continues outside the classroom. Advanced-level students may also take RRC Polytech academic courses at the same time.

Completing Level 5 meets the English language requirement for RRC Polytech diploma and degree programmes, which makes EAPP a bridge into further study rather than a job qualification on its own. The stronger English it builds supports later roles such as customer service representative, administrative assistant, retail sales associate or hotel front desk agent once you finish a career programme. It suits applicants whose test scores fall just short of direct entry and who want structured, level-by-level progress.
