International Pathway to Nursing and Bachelor of Nursing

Hoping to become a registered nurse in Canada? RRC Polytech’s dual pathway begins with the International Pathway to Nursing, an eight-month, two-term Statement of Achievement at the Notre Dame Campus in northwest Winnipeg, and continues into the 32-month Bachelor of Nursing degree. The first stage builds the nursing English, academic skills and cultural knowledge international students need, and successful graduates gain direct entry into RRC Polytech’s Nursing programme.

Term 1 of the pathway includes Communication Foundations for Nursing 1, Academic Success Strategies, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Foundations, Medical Terminology and Human Anatomy and Physiology. Term 2 continues with Communication Foundations for Nursing 2, Pronunciation in Nursing, Nursing in Canada, Intercultural Competence for Health Professions, Psychology and a second Human Anatomy and Physiology course. You must pass all 11 courses with at least 65% (C+) before the Nursing intake, so the pathway doubles as preparation and a readiness check for degree study.

The Bachelor of Nursing that follows is the equivalent of four academic years compressed into 32 months, with each year of study lasting ten months. Theory and clinical practice run side by side throughout, and after the final academic year you complete a 450-hour senior practicum. Graduates become eligible to apply to write the NCLEX-RN licensing examination and, once they pass, to apply for membership of the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba and use the Registered Nurse designation.

Registered nurses from this route work in medical-surgical units, emergency departments, long-term care, community health, home care and mental health services. The dual programme suits committed students with strong Grade 12 math and prior anatomy and physiology study who want a structured, supported route from international schooling to a Canadian nursing career.
