Business Administration: International Year One (Cornerstone Entry)

Starting a business degree in a new country is a big step, and Cornerstone Entry gives you a steadier first term. You still join the Business Administration year of FIC’s UTP Stage II, known as International Year One, on SFU’s Burnaby campus, but the programme stretches to four terms, around sixteen months in total. That added time is used to prepare you properly rather than to slow you down.

The first term is the Cornerstone semester: CNST101 develops reading, writing and study skills, CNQS101 is a quantitative survey course, and CNSU101 introduces university life in Canada. Passing CNST101 also replaces ILS101. You then move into the business core, including BUS200 Business Fundamentals, BUS251 Financial Accounting I, microeconomics and macroeconomics through ECON103 and ECON105, and Calculus I. BUS216 later trains you to write and present business messages clearly, a skill Beedie instructors expect from day one.

Every FIC course is built by SFU and delivered by instructors SFU has approved. To transfer, you complete ten courses at C- or higher; a 3.2 cumulative GPA guarantees entry to year two of the Bachelor of Business Administration at SFU’s Beedie School of Business, and results from 2.67 allow a broad-based application instead. Beedie students may add paid co-op terms to their degree, gaining Canadian work experience before graduation. The Beedie School holds AACSB and EQUIS accreditation.

Career paths after the degree include banking, market research, logistics coordination, entrepreneurship support, payroll and human resources, and business consulting. Cornerstone is designed for students who need the most English support at entry and want an extra term to settle in before the full business workload begins.
