Health Sciences (Bachelor of Arts): International Year One (Cornerstone Entry)

Health is shaped by policy, culture and biology all at once, and this pathway lets you study all three. The Health Sciences (BA) stream in International Year One (UTP Stage II), with Cornerstone Entry at Fraser International College (FIC), which is based at SFU Burnaby, starts with a dedicated support semester. That makes four terms in total, roughly sixteen months.

In the Cornerstone semester you take CNSU101 Cornerstone University Life, CNST101 Cornerstone Academic Program and CNQS101 Cornerstone Quantitative Survey, which cover study skills, basic quantitative work and adjusting to campus. Passing CNST101 means you do not need ILSA101 later. Then the health sciences year begins: BISC100 biology, HSCI160 on global health, STAT203 statistics, plus options such as BPK140 Contemporary Health Issues or INDG101 Introduction to Indigenous Studies.

All FIC courses are designed by SFU and delivered by approved instructors, in small classes with regular contact time. Students can use university libraries, recreation facilities and health services. To move into the Faculty of Health Sciences you need 10 completed courses, a 2.50 GPA and nothing lower than C-. The next step is second year of the SFU Bachelor of Arts in Health Sciences, where co-op terms can be added.

Graduates work in roles such as public health inspector, health services administrator, community outreach specialist and health educator, with some moving into pharmaceutical sales. Cornerstone Entry is suited to applicants whose English level is at the entry minimum for UTP Stage II and who would benefit from a gentler first term before full university courses begin.
