Assiniboine’s Accounting advanced diploma is an eight-month post-graduate programme that deepens your knowledge of the principles used in businesses and accounting firms. It is taught at the Victoria Avenue East campus in Brandon and starts in September.

Financial Accounting 3, Financial Accounting 4 and Advanced Financial Reporting take you well past the basics into complex reporting standards. Introductory Mgmnt Accounting, Intermediate Mgmnt Accounting, Advanced Management Accounting and Performance Management cover costing, budgeting and decision support. Taxation 1 and Taxation 2 prepare you for personal and corporate returns, Audit and Assurance explains how statements are tested, and Corporate Finance, Statistics 1, Statistics 2, Business Law, Canadian Business and Society, Indigenous History and Indigenous Human/Fiscal Issues widen the business context.

Software is a practical strand of the programme: Sage Accounting Software, Advanced Software and Information Management Tech train you in Sage 50, advanced Excel and database tools that small and mid-sized firms use daily. Applicants need entry level accounting knowledge, and those without it take Financial Accounting 1 and Financial Accounting 2 first. Assiniboine notes that completing the advanced diploma may qualify graduates for advanced standing in the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) preparatory courses.

Accounting advanced diploma graduates work as accounting technicians, bookkeepers, accounts payable and accounts receivable clerks, payroll clerks and tax return specialists in accounting firms, businesses and public organisations. The programme suits graduates of business, arts or science who want a focused, technical year of accounting study, and anyone who plans to continue into the CPA preparatory route after gaining some work experience.
