Business Administration (HR Management Specialization)

Every hire, payslip, safety policy and union contract passes through human resources. Assiniboine College’s Business Administration (HR Management Specialization) is a two-year diploma taught at the Victoria Avenue East campus in Brandon, where students can begin in September or January.

Before HR courses take over, your first year in the HR Management specialization follows the shared Business Administration core: Financial Accounting 1 and 2, Economics 1, Marketing Principles, Human Resource Management, Organizations and Management, Math for Business, Communications, Personal Management and Software Applications. Year two focuses on people management through Staffing, Compensation, Training and Development, Human Resource Law and Labour Relations, which cover recruiting, pay design, employee learning, employment legislation and collective bargaining. Advanced Software, Economics 2, Research and Report Writing, Canadian Business and Society and Business Capstone complete the diploma.

Assiniboine states that the HR specialization provides the course learning requirements for the Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation, so graduates start the professional pathway with the required coursework already done. An optional 16-week co-op placement lets students work inside an HR department before finishing. The two-year Business Administration programme holds accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), an international quality assurance body, and Assiniboine’s articulation agreements can carry credit into further study at other colleges and universities.

Graduates of the HR specialization find roles such as human resources assistant, recruitment coordinator, payroll and benefits administrator, health and safety assistant and training assistant in businesses, health organisations, school divisions and government. The stream suits organised, discreet students who enjoy working with people and policy, and who want a Business Administration diploma that finishes with the CPHR course requirements in hand.
