Comprehensive Health Care Aide

Behind every well-run personal care home is a team of aides who know each resident by name. The Comprehensive Health Care Aide certificate from Assiniboine is offered as a nine-month international cohort at the college’s Winnipeg campus, giving Manitoba’s capital city a direct route into frontline care through a 55.5-credit version of the programme.

In Winnipeg you study the same Assiniboine curriculum as other campuses. Daily Living Theory explains the principles of bathing, feeding, mobility and comfort, and Daily Living Laboratory lets you rehearse them step by step. Gerontology and Growth and Development describe the ageing process, Mental Health prepares you to support clients’ emotional and cognitive needs, and Nutrition, Health Issues/Community Health and Health, Environment & Safety cover diet, community care and safety at work. Human Relations/Communication strengthens teamwork with nurses and families, and College Foundations introduces college study.

Simulation labs mirror real care settings with up-to-date equipment. Clinical learning comes in two blocks, Practicum 1 - CHCA and the Senior Practicum CHCA, each 120 hours, placed in personal care homes, acute care, community care or mental health settings across the city; shifts can fall on days, evenings, nights or weekends and travel may be needed. CPR-HCP or BLS certification, immunisations and criminal record vulnerable sector, child abuse and adult abuse registry checks are needed before placement. The Winnipeg cohort also completes Safe Patient Handling, Electronic Patient Record training, N95 mask fit testing, PHIA, WHMIS, Fire Safety, Provincial Violence Prevention and Abuse and Neglect training, and graduates can later progress toward Practical Nursing.

Winnipeg graduates take roles as health care aides in personal care homes, hospital unit aides, home care attendants, community support workers, mental health aides and private care aides, with health authorities, long-term care operators and home care agencies.
