Program overview
Who decides how a company hires, pays, trains and bargains with its people? Assiniboine College’s Human Resource Management advanced diploma answers that question in eight months, and it is open to applicants who already hold a two-year diploma or a university degree. Classes run at the Victoria Avenue East campus in Brandon, starting each September.
The course list covers the full employment cycle. Human Resource Management sets the foundations, Staffing covers recruitment and selection, Compensation looks at pay structures and benefits, and Training and Development shows how to design learning for employees. Human Resource Law and Labour Relations explain employment legislation and collective bargaining with unions. Technology is handled in HRM Systems and Management Information Systems, while Statistics 1 and Statistics 2 support workforce analytics and pay surveys. Business Law, Canadian Business and Society, Advanced Software, Indigenous History and Indigenous Human/Fiscal Issues give the wider business and community context.
Assiniboine designed the programme around the professional HR designation in Canada. According to the college, graduates may pursue the Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR) designation and may be eligible for a waiver from the CPHR National Knowledge Exam. There is no co-op term in this eight-month programme; instead, guest speakers and industry networking connect students with working HR practitioners. Credits may also be recognised under Assiniboine’s transfer agreements with other colleges, universities and professional organisations.
Graduates of the Human Resource Management advanced diploma work as human resources assistants, recruitment coordinators, compensation and benefits assistants, training coordinators and labour relations assistants, often growing into HR generalist roles. It suits diploma or degree holders, including those from business, psychology or administration backgrounds, who want a single focused year that aligns their knowledge with the CPHR pathway and Canadian employment law.

Typical destinations for graduates:

- Recruitment Coordinator: staffing agencies
- Compensation and Benefits Assistant: corporate HR departments
- Training Coordinator: government organisations
