Program overview

A clinic runs on accurate charts, well-managed appointment books and a calm voice at the front desk. Assiniboine’s Medical Administration certificate is a 16-month programme that prepares you for administrative work in doctors’ offices, hospitals, medical clinics and other health settings. It is taught at Assiniboine’s Victoria Avenue East campus in Brandon and starts in September.

The health-specific courses give the programme its focus. Medical Terminology 1 and Medical Terminology 2 cover body systems, pathologies and diagnostic testing, Medical Documentation teaches how clinical records are written and kept, and Healthcare Ethics and Legal explains confidentiality and consent. Electronic Medical Records and Medical Simulation put that knowledge to work. Office Procedures 1 to 3, Microsoft Office 1 to 3, Accounting Principles and Customer Service 1 to 3 supply the scheduling, keyboarding, billing and patient service skills every medical office needs.

Electronic Medical Records gives you hands-on experience with industry standard medical software, and Medical Simulation lets you rehearse clinic workflows before meeting real patients. Because Microsoft Office and the programme software do not run on Mac devices, students bring a compatible Windows laptop. Employability and Job Prep leads into Practicum - OFFA, a 240-hour placement under employer supervision, available to students who hold a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or greater.

Medical Administration graduates are hired by hospitals, private practice clinics, wellness clinics and veterinary clinics. Typical roles include medical office assistant, medical receptionist, unit clerk, health records clerk, clinic scheduler and veterinary clinic receptionist. The certificate suits organised people with good listening skills who want to work in health care in a patient-facing office role rather than a clinical one, and who are comfortable handling sensitive information.
