Program overview
Roads, culverts, foundations and water mains all begin with a technician setting up a total station and taking careful measurements. Civil Engineering Technician is a two-year, four-semester Ontario College Diploma at Cambrian College’s Barrydowne campus in Sudbury that trains you to survey, draft, test materials and support construction projects.
Semester one starts with Concrete & Asphalt 1, Construction Technology, Surveying I and Algebra I. Semester two adds Engineering Graphics, Mechanics, Algebra II, Surveying II, Survey Field Methods and Technical Communication. In semester three you study Computer Aided Drafting II, Soil Mechanics I, Civil Engineering Applications, Basic Hydraulics, Strength Of Materials I, Technical Math III and Sustainable Practices. The final term covers Municipal Planning, Structural Behaviour & Detailing, Computer Aided Structural Detailing, Contracts Law & Specifications and Special Projects 1, preparing you to read drawings, test soils and aggregates and detail steel and concrete.
At the end of semester two every student attends a compulsory two-week surveying field camp in CSA-approved safety boots and vest, turning Survey Field Methods into real traverses and levelling runs. From semester two onward you run drafting and design software on a Windows 11 laptop with a dedicated graphics card. Optional Infrastructure Opportunities Partnership placements and co-op connect you with employers, and graduates can pursue C.Tech. certification through OACETT or a limited licence with the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors. You can also compete to enter semester five of Cambrian’s Civil Engineering Technology advanced diploma.
Graduates of Cambrian’s Civil Engineering Technician diploma work as survey technician, materials testing technician, civil drafter, construction inspector, estimator and municipal engineering assistant. It suits practical, outdoors-minded people who are comfortable with algebra and trigonometry, enjoy a mix of site and office work and want a clear route toward technologist study.

Admission requirements:
- Education: Grade 12 with English and Grade 12 Maths, minimum 50%.
- English: IELTS 6.0 (no band below 5.5), TOEFL iBT 80, PTE 58 or Duolingo 105.
- PGWP: Yes (CIP 15.0201), up to 3 years. Needs CLB 5.
- Before you apply: CAD 95 application fee. Ontario PAL required. Visa refused? Full refund less CAD 250 if you send the refusal within 10 business days.
