Program overview
Who designs the highway interchange, sizes the storm sewer and checks that a foundation will carry its load? Civil Engineering Technology is Cambrian College’s three-year, six-semester Ontario College Advanced Diploma, nationally accredited by Technology Accreditation Canada and taught full time at the Barrydowne campus in Sudbury.
The first two years build core skills through Concrete & Asphalt 1, Construction Technology, Surveying I and II, Survey Field Methods, Engineering Graphics, Mechanics, Soil Mechanics I, Basic Hydraulics, Strength Of Materials I, Municipal Planning and Structural Behaviour & Detailing. Semester five moves into design with Soil Mechanics II, Municipal Services, Structural Design, Strength Of Materials II, Construction Project Management, Infrastructure Asset Management and Technical Report Research. The final semester covers Foundations, Reinforced Concrete, Highway Design, GIS Applications and Applied Calculus, and you complete a Technical Report that counts toward OACETT certification.
A two-week surveying field camp takes Surveying II outdoors, and in second year you enter Cambrian’s annual mine headframe design competition, a nod to Sudbury’s mining landscape. You work with GIS, drafting and surveying software on a Windows 11 laptop with a dedicated NVIDIA graphics card, since the page notes many tools will not run on Mac. Optional Infrastructure Opportunities Partnership placements and co-op add employer contact. Graduates can seek C.E.T. status through OACETT, pursue an AOLS land surveying licence, or use articulation agreements toward a Bachelor of Engineering in civil engineering.
Graduates of this Civil Engineering Technology diploma become civil engineering technologist, structural detailer, highway design technologist, municipal infrastructure technologist, construction project coordinator and geotechnical technologist. It suits analytical students who like calculus and structures, want a TAC-accredited qualification and may later pursue an engineering degree.

Admission requirements:
- Education: Grade 12 with English and Grade 12 Maths, minimum 50%.
- English: IELTS 6.0 (no band below 5.5), TOEFL iBT 80, PTE 58 or Duolingo 105.
- PGWP: Yes (CIP 15.0201), up to 3 years. Needs CLB 5.
- Before you apply: CAD 95 application fee. Ontario PAL required. Visa refused? Full refund less CAD 250 if you send the refusal within 10 business days.
