Computer Programming - Internet of Things

What does it take to make a sensor, a robot and a cloud database talk to each other? Computer Programming - Internet of Things answers that question in a two-year Ontario College Diploma, taught over four semesters at Cambrian College’s Barrydowne campus in Sudbury, with a focus on IoT that Cambrian describes as one of a kind in a programming diploma.

Semester one covers Programming Fundamentals, Operating Systems, Electrical Electronic Circuits, Discrete Math and Intro to Software Project Management. Semester two adds Programming IoT Devices, Object Oriented Prog, Introduction to Networking, Relational Databases and Applied Math. In semester three you study Data Structures, Computer Architecture Assembly, IoT Protocols and Networks, Data Analytics, Application Programming Interfaces and Software Development, and semester four brings IoT Security, Industrial Internet of Things, AI and Machine Learning and Multiplatform App Development.

Learning is hands-on from the first weeks, when students obtain an Arduino kit, an electronics kit and a Raspberry Pi to design robotic and smart devices with sensors and actuators. You integrate software with relational and NoSQL databases and work with IoT hardware, cloud platforms, data analytics and artificial intelligence. IoT Capstone Project I and IoT Capstone Project run across the final two semesters, and articulation agreements open pathways to university study, including Cambrian’s Bachelor of Applied Computing, and to graduate certificates.

Graduates work as IoT developers, embedded software programmers, junior software developers, data analytics assistants, industrial automation programmers and application developers, in sectors Cambrian highlights such as mining, healthcare, transportation, energy and automation. The programme suits coders who enjoy wiring circuits as much as writing classes, and who want to build connected systems rather than stay purely on screen.
